Isaias forms - First hurricane of the Atlantic season

Isaias forms
First hurricane of the Atlantic season

After a quiet start, the Atlantic's first hurricane has finally formed. Isaias is the latest first hurricane since the satellite era began in1966. With the Gulf Coast in sight, what impacts are expected?

After a historically slow start to the Atlantic hurricane season, Isaias is targeting the northern Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to strengthen into a strong hurricane before making landfall late Friday or early Saturday, bringing dangerous winds, flooding rain and life-threatening storm surge.

The biggest concern is storm surge, with water levels potentially rising 5 to 7 feet along parts of the Alabama and western Florida Panhandle coastlines. Those who live between Ocean Springs, Miss., to the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida need to pay close attention to the forecast. Damaging winds could knock out power for an extended period.

Landfall expected late Friday or early Saturday.

Heavy rain will also spread across the central Gulf Coast and much of the Southeast Friday into the weekend, raising the risk of flash flooding and isolated river flooding. Residents should follow evacuation orders and local alerts, while the WeatherRadar can help track Isaias as it approaches the coast.
