Breakfast brief
Alberto impacts wane, heatwave continues

Rain and gusty conditions associated with Tropical Storm Alberto will continue to weaken through the morning hour. To the north, a potent and long-duration heat wave continues to persist across the Northeast.

Did you know?

On this day in 1993, Tropical Storm Arlene made landfall, bringing significant rainfall and gusty winds to parts of the Gulf Coast. This storm resulted in localized flooding and prompted warnings and evacuations.

Today's weather outlook

To the north, a relentless heatwave is underway across the eastern U.S., with temperatures potentially reaching the upper 90s today and Friday. Many locations across the region will see or at least approach daily temperature record high levels.

rain totals

While Wednesday came with a relative break, heavy rainfall chances are once more on the rise today and Friday for the central U.S. The focus for flooding rain will be across portions of the eastern Dakotas and western Minnesota today, then shifting east into the upper Midwest Friday.

Tropical update

Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall over northeast Mexico. Due to its large size and asymmetric shape, areas well to the north of Alberto's center have felt its impacts, including heavy rain, storm surge, gusty winds, and river flooding. Today, impacts will be winding down.

Following the steps of Alberto, another area of low pressure is forecast to develop in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Conditions will be favorable for further development of this system. Meanwhile, a tropical wave has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical depression as it approaches the northeastern coast of Florida or the Georgia coast by early Friday.

The news we're covering today:

  • Impacts of Tropical Storm Alberto felt across Texas
  • Persistent heatwave continues
