Breakfast brief
Arctic blast sinks south

A big arctic blast continues its southbound journey Thursday, bringing freezing temperatures to the Gulf Coast this morning. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

This morning's TemperatureRadar shows the arctic blast settling across much of Texas and the Gulf Coast. A sub-freezing start extends from New Orleans to the Canada border with much of the central U.S. from Kansas City northward will have sub-zero temperatures.

The arctic temperatures extend eastward into the Northeast, where morning teens and 20s will only rise into the 20s and near 30 degrees, respectfully. A few flurries will be possible too. The only spot east of the Rockies that will be warm will be South Florida, where highs in the 70s will be possible. A cold northwest wind will keep the rest of the Sunshine State in the 50s and 60s this afternoon.

The WeatherRadar shows the Rockies will be active as snow rolls in from the Northwest. Salt Lake City and Denver will have to deal with slick roads. Rain will slide into Seattle and the coastal Northwest.

California, Nevada and the Southwest will be mostly sunny with seasonal 60s and 70s.
