Central N.Y.
Five days of snow and counting

Lake effect snow is responsible for feet of snow per year across the snowbelt of the Great Lakes, especially from Northeast Ohio to New York. Central N.Y., has been getting almost non-stop snow since Friday, February 14, 2025.

More than 78 inches of snow has piled up in Palermo, N.Y., and lake effect snow warnings last through Wednesday morning. An additional 12 to 18 inches could accumulate on top of the feet of snow already causing problems in central N.Y. Palermo, specifically, has received almost 100 inches of snow since Monday, February 10!

Oswego County has declared a state of emergency amid the heavy snowfall.

When does the snow machine take a break? The WeatherRadar shows snow through the rest of this week for the New York snowbelt, especially Thursday as a winter storm exits the East Coast and drags an arctic air mass behind it, triggering snow across the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Current ice coverage on Lake Ontario from NOAA.

With below-average lake ice present over Lake Ontario, the lake responsible for the moisture availability, more lake effect snow is possible in the future. Check your forecast often to know when quieter weather is expected.
