Wednesday forecast

Severe storms continue to be a major problem heading into the mid-week, with severe storms possible from Texas to the Northeast. The East stays hot while the West and Plains stays mild.

1915 Lassen eruption

Lassen Peak in northern California erupted on this day in 1915. Its ash plume was visible from Eureka, Calif., 150 miles away.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar is showing several areas of rain and thunderstorms today.

A line of storms moving out of the central Plains will expand and strengthen as they move across the Mississippi Valley and into the Mid-South, Midwest, and the central Great Lakes. A few of these storms could become severe as they develop throughout the afternoon from eastern Texas northeastward into the Great Lakes. As the front becomes stationary, periods of heavy rain will be persistent, increasing the flood risk from North Texas through the Ozarks.

The WeatherRadar is also showing heavy rain and even some mountain snow across the Northwest and northern Cascades. This will suppress temperatures, with the TemperatureRadar barely climbing into the 50s in Seattle and Portland, Ore. This chill extends into the interior Northwest and the northern Rockies.

The East and South remains unseasonably hot with highs in the 80s dominating. Hotter 90s will be found across Florida and Texas.
