Breakfast brief
New week, new severe threats

May 6th breakfast brief

A new week begins with a significant round of severe storms moving across the central Plains. Afternoon storms bring the threat of damaging winds and significant tornadoes.

Oh, the humanity

On May 6th, 1937, the Hindenburg, a German hydrogen gas-filled rigid airship, caught fire in Lakehurst, N.J. killing 35 aboard and one person on the ground. Exact cause isn't know, but static electricity from a recent thunderstorm is a possible cause.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar shows a low pressure system moving out of the central Rockies today. As it pushes eastward, it will drage a dryline across the southern and central Plains. This will the area where the strongest severe storms will develop.

May 6th WeatherRadarHeavy rain and thunderstorms will move across the central Plains on May 6th.

In addition to the severe storm threat, high elevation snow is likely across central and northern Rockies with significant accumulations at elevations over 8,000 feet.

It will be a white knuckle day across the high western and northern Plains too. Winds gusting to 75 mph will make for dangerous driving for high profile vehicles and local power outages cannot be ruled out.

The East and South will be a bit unsettled with showers and a few breaks in the clouds bringing some sunshine. The West will remain chilly.

Here is what we are watching:

  • Severe storms likely across southern and central Plains
  • Mountain snow wraps up
  • Windy threat
