Breakfast brief
Severe threat spreads eastward

Thursday Breakfast brief

The busy week of severe weather continues Thursday, with more storms likely from Texas into the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Sunshine Skyway tragedy

On this day in 1980, a freighter struck the Sunshine Skyway bridge near the mouth of Tampa Bay, causing a road section to collapse, killing 35 people. A microburst reduced visibility and pushed the ship into the bridge.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar remains active across several broad spots of the U.S.

The broadest area of concern runs from eastern and central Texas eastward across the South into the Mid-Atlantic. A broad storm system will produce widespread thunderstorms and downpours. The thunderstorms could produce damaging winds and large hail.

A lingering upper-level system remains stationed over the north-central Rockies and Mountain West. As it swirls in place, it will produce more high elevation snow while keeping the interior West unseasonably cold. wilwill produce more late-season snow across the northern Rockies, with rain falling over the highest Plains. This system will keep the Interior West cold for early May, with highs once again struggling to climb out of the 40s and 50s, with 30s found across the higher elevations.
