Breakfast Brief: Soggy Mid-Atlantic may flood

Breakfast Brief
Soggy Mid-Atlantic may flood

The heat will continue to sizzle across the West, with more record-breaking temperatures on the way. On the other end of the country, heavy downpours may lead to flooding across the Mid-Atlantic.

Did you know?

On this day in 2011, a powerful derecho struck east central Iowa, causing widespread damage and extensive power outages. With gusts over 100 mph, it traveled rapidly during the early morning, causing structural damage, uprooting trees, and downing power lines. Cedar Rapids and Des Moines were particularly affected.

Sizzling heat continues for parts of California, Nevada, Arizona and the Rockies. Once again, the TemperatureRadar is showing record or near-record highs across these regions. While the Pacific Northwest is experiencing a much-needed dip in temperatures, the heat sticks around for the rest of the West into the weekend.

Heat and humidity stick around across the Southeast, but record highs are unlikely. Storms will pop up over the Mid-Atlantic, and they will have some tropical moisture to work with.

Stormy Mid-Atlantic

Tropical update:

A weak tropical disturbance is producing scattered showers and thunderstorms off the Carolinas. This low is not expected to develop but it will help send tropical moisture north to the Mid-Atlantic. Combine this system with a stalled front, and heavy downpours will ensue. Rain totals up to 5 inches will be possible.

The news we're covering today:

  • Weak tropical disturbance and front bring heavy rain to Mid-Atlantic
  • Heat wave continues across the West
