Breakfast brief
Southern Spring fever

Spring-like temperatures could set a few records today throughout Texas and the South. However, troubling stormy and icy weather lurks later today along the warm air edges. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

A strong southerly flow, as seen on the WindRadar, will bring warmer air northward today, setting the stage for near-record temperatures in the 70s across Texas and the South. A few spots in West Texas and Oklahoma could reach the low 80s.

A front dividing the warm Gulf air from the much colder air setting across the Plains will produce a few thunderstorms and downpours. North of the front, there will be sub-freezing temperatures, and an icy mix of freezing rain and sleet will develop, especially from the afternoon rush hour into the overnight hours from Chicago to Pittsburgh. The WeatherRadar also shows snow across the Upper Midwest.

The atmospheric river, which has brought heavy snow to the Sierras and more than a foot of rain to several northern and central California locations over the past several days, will be less intense today. However, snow will still cause troubles over the Cascades into the northern Rockies while rain falls along the immediate Pacific Coast of northern California and the Pacific Northwest. A few renegade showers will sweep into southern California, including Los Angeles. Track it using the WeatherRadar.

It is a quiet midweek across the Southwest and western Plains, with mild 60s and low 70s prevalent. The Northeast will be in the teens.
