Breakfast brief
Spring makes a slow return

Have you noticed a spring hiatus? While many will still have wintry weather on Friday, temperatures will start slowly rising, but it will be a while before warmer weather reaches from coast to coast.

Did you know?

On this day in 1989, torrential downpours in Texas and Arkansas caused millions in damages. Longview, Texas, had 14.16 inches of rainfall and a dam broke after 11 inches of rain in Henderson, Texas. After the dam break, many had to be rescued from trees by boat.

Today's weather outlook

The same frontal system that brought heavy rain from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast is finally moving further into the Atlantic, only bothering coastal Northeast residents with rainfall and mountain snow for a little while longer today. Luckily, weekend temps are on the rise.

On the West Coast, a fresh storm is approaching on Friday, bringing rain and Sierra Nevada snow. This time, California takes the brunt of the storm, with chances for flooding rains in SoCal. The Pacific Northwest, although not completely out of the clouds, will only be impacted by scattered rain and snow showers.

A new low-pressure storm system is approaching California and will bring heavy rain and mountain snow.

Wintry weather sticks around in the central Rockies and Upper Midwest as two separate systems bring snow and cold rainfall. It's spring, but keep the winter emergency kits packed and ready to go in the car.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
