Breakfast brief
Storms shift east, West heats up

Friday review

Another day of record-breaking heat is in the cards across the West, South-Central U.S., and Florida. Meanwhile, the East remains cool, with significantly below-normal temperatures across nearly all areas east of the Mississippi with isolated showers and thunderstorms pushing east throughout the day.

Did you know?

On June 7, 2020, Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall in southeastern Louisiana. This storm brought heavy rains, strong winds, and caused significant flooding in several areas along the Gulf Coast. Cristobal was notable for its early formation in the Atlantic hurricane season and its wide-reaching impact, affecting areas from Mexico to the Midwest of the United States.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar Friday morning shows mainly quiet conditions across much of the continental U.S., except some areas along the Deep South and the Great Lakes. A cold front associated with a low-pressure system that brought a tornado outbreak on Wednesday is finally pushing offshore from the Deep South. Only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected along the front as it shifts east.

To the north, the parent low-pressure system lingers, funneling unseasonably cool air across much of the upper right quadrant of the continental U.S. It also sparks isolated scattered showers across the Great Lakes and Interior Northeast. The clouds, rain, and cool weather will make it feel more like early April than early June.

forecast afternoon temperatures
A non-exhaustive list of locations that reach daily record-high temperatures on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Across the West, over a dozen states are experiencing above-average temperatures as the season's first major heat wave firmly sets in across the region. While more record-breaking temperatures are possible, for example across Central California Valley, Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho, the heat should decrease as the parent high-pressure system begins to weaken slightly.

Tropical update

There is currently no tropical cyclone activity expected during the next seven days. However, an envelope of tropical moisture will migrate north starting early to mid-next week bringing increased shower and thunderstorm activity across the Florida Peninsula. Development of this system into an organized tropical cyclone is not expected at this time.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
