Breakfast brief
Storms spread East, new tropical wave

A tumultuous weather week is in the cards for the Eastern U.S. as a series of storm-bearing fronts push east across the region.

Did you know?

On this day in 1969, an F2 tornado struck the northeast side of Groton, S. Dak., destroying a large grain elevator and uprooting huge trees. This tornado caused significant property damage estimated at a quarter million dollars and resulted in four hospitalizations.

Today's weather outlook

Storms will continue today across the Upper Midwest as a cold front pushes east and south across the region. The front will trigger additional showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, affecting cities like Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Kansas City. Stormy conditions are likely to persist through the overnight period, pushing towards the Eastern Seaboard by Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Another active monsoon day is expected across the Southwest, with a few showers potentially triggering localized flash flooding. Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest will enjoy a much warmer and sunnier day, with temperatures reaching the upper 70s across Puget Sound communities and the upper 80s across eastern Oregon.

Tropical Update

A tropical wave producing showers and thunderstorms will track across the Caribbean this week. Conditions remain marginally conducive for this system to strengthen as it reaches the western Caribbean or southern Gulf of Mexico by this weekend.

The news we're covering today:

  • Hot and stormy: Unstable weather continues across the East
