Breakfast brief
Stormy Memorial Day for East

Monday National Outlook

It is going to be a stormy Memorial Day across much of the East and parts of the South. Any outdoor grilling and picnic activities might need alternative indoor contingency plans. It will be quieter for the rest of the U.S., with a few spots having near record heat.

Memorial Day origins

Did you know, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day? It originated with decorating soldier's graves with flower. It didn't become standardized across the U.S. as Memorial Day until 1971.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar is tracking a cold front moving across the East. This will bring big storms extending from the Gulf Coast into New England.

The strongest storms will be found across the Mid-Atlantic and the Deep South, where gusty storms could produce wind damage and power outages just as holiday festivities get underway. Birmingham, Ala., Richmond, Va., Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia could all be affected.

Memorial Day MondayMemorial Day weekend

The TemperatureRadar will be tracking more triple-digit highs across southern and western Texas while the rest of the South stays unseasonably hot. The Western U.S. and the northern Plains will remain comfortable mild.
