Breakfast Brief: Tropical storm exits Fla., heat continues

Breakfast Brief
Hurricane Debby's historic rainfall, heat continues

Today, the focus is on Hurricane Debby, which will lose forward speed and bring major flooding problems across the Southeast. Meanwhile, intense summer heat continues to bake portions of the country, but relief is on the way for some.

The intense heat that has roasted large portions of the West and South this weekend will continue today, with extreme afternoon temperatures in the 100s for many locations. Making matters worse, the humidity across the South will make it feel even hotter, pushing afternoon feels-like temperatures well into the 100s.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel for some areas. For example, the Northern Plains and Midwest are forecast to experience significant relief starting today. Cities like Minneapolis, Minn., and Eau Claire, Wis., will see daytime highs in the low to mid-70s on Monday. Meanwhile, portions of the Northeast will also experience a cooldown compared to previous weeks.

Did you know?

On this day in 1996, a powerful thunderstorm hit South Dakota, particularly affecting the Belle Fourche Reservoir area. This storm brought winds exceeding 100 mph and grapefruit-sized hail, causing an estimated $4.5 million in crop damage, killing numerous livestock, and stripping vegetation bare.

The WeatherRadar shows showers and thunderstorms along a frontal boundary (dashed line), bringing cooler air south from Canada.

While cool is on the way for these northern locations, first comes the rain. If you live anywhere from the Northern Plains to the Great Lakes and New England, keep the WeatherRadar handy. A frontal system will spark showers and a few thunderstorms ahead of the cooler air on Monday, likely lingering into Tuesday for the Northeast.

Tropical update:

Debby continued to intensify over the weekend and became a hurricane Sunday evening. Overnight it came closer to Florida and made landfall near Steinhatchee Florida. It will downgrade after landfall but it will crawl, exacerbating dangerous flash floods across the Southeast.

Tropical Storm Carlotta is moving west across the East Pacific and is expected to continue strengthening as it heads deeper into the ocean. No significant impacts to land are anticipated.

The news we're covering today:

  • Debby became a hurricane and makes landfall in Florida, now a prolonged rain event
