Buffalo Bills dominate in snowy weather

Lake-effect snow turned Highmark Stadium into a winter showdown as the Buffalo Bills faced off against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the wintry conditions, fans and players embraced the elements, making for a game to remember.

This weekend, Orchard Park, N.Y., near Buffalo, became the focus of weather drama and sports excitement. As lake-effect snow swept across the region, spectators at Highmark Stadium found themselves in the heart of a lake-effect snowband. Thick flakes blanketed the stadium, creating an energetic—yet challenging—scene for the Buffalo Bills and the visiting San Francisco 49ers.

The WeatherRadar showed heavy lake-effect snow bands moving over Highmark Stadium right around kickoff on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024.

Lake-effect snow, a hallmark of the Great Lakes winter, occurs when cold air passes over the warmer waters of a lake, picking up moisture and depositing it as snow onshore.

The event delivered significant snowfall, with temperatures hovering around 28°F (-2°C). Yet, the weather only amplified the electric atmosphere. Bills fans braved the cold, jumping and singing The Killers’ "Mr. Brightside" to stay warm.

Buffalo, N.Y. averages over 95 inches of snow annually and is considered one of the snowiest places in the continental U.S.

The Bills thrived despite the challenging conditions, leading to a 35-10 victory and securing their fifth consecutive AFC East Division Championship. Fans reveled in the win, showing that no amount of snow could dampen their enthusiasm.

Football games in Buffalo are no stranger to snow. In fact, the city has hosted some of the NFL’s most memorable winter matchups, including the iconic "Snow Bowl" of 2017, where 8 inches of snow fell during a single game.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
