Cloud bridge after thunderstorm

An award-winning photograph shows a "cloud bridge" against a luminous evening sky in the Czech Republic.

Captured during a tornado storm in 2021 the bridge is remnants of a dissipating thunderstorm, which has arranged itself into a bridge formation as the sun went down.

If you look closely, you can see the mammatus clouds typical of thunderstorms above the "cloud bridge".

The photo, which won an international photo competition, was taken on 24 June 2021 in Žernov in the Czech Republic. Around 124 miles south, there was a devastating tornado that day that left a trail of destruction.

Over 120,000 households were left without electricity as the storm ripped off roofs, destroyed buildings, smashed windows, overturned cars, and scattered debris through the streets.

Three people died and hundreds left injured after the rare but very potent tornado which hit towns and villages surrounding Hodonin, located near the Slovakian and Austrian borders.
