Daily briefing
Autumn front triggers rainfall, cooldown

A strong cold front is bringing wet and stormy weather today to the eastern third. A big cooldown is just behind it, bringing an autumn chill. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

Commutes are being slowed by heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms this morning across the Great Lakes and down to the lower Mississippi Valley, central and southern Plains and the Front Range. This wet weather will slowly shift east throughout the day, reaching the Northeast and Appalachians by mid-day and the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic later.

Flash flooding is possible across the lower Ohio Valley and the Tennessee Valley today. Keep checking the WeatherRadar throughout the day to know what's in store locally.

Flood safety tips: Stay informed, never drive into the water and get to higher ground

Additionally, a low-pressure system in the southern Rockies could trigger isolated severe weather today, with large hail being the main issue.

As the big front pushes through and high pressure settles in, many will notice the tumbling temperatures. This air mass only brought highs in the lower 60s and upper 50s to the northern and high Plains on Monday. Chicago, Kansas City and Oklahoma City will notice cooler temperatures today in the 60s and 70s, with low to mid 70s reaching from Nashville to Syracuse in the rain.

The East Coast will remain warm before the front reaches them late tonight with highs in the 70s and 80s. The warmest temperatures will be found along the Gulf Coast and the Southwest in the 80s and 90s, and the West Coast will have unseasonable warmth in the 70s and 80s all the way up to Seattle.

Tropical Update

Development is likely for the cluster of thunderstorms in the central Atlantic as it moves into favorable conditions throughout the week. Another area of interest is being watched in the southern Gulf, but only has a 10 percent chance of organization over the next 7 days.
