Daily briefing
Flash flood threat for the Southeast & more

The heavy rains will continue to impact much of the Southeast on Wednesday and the monsoon will impact Arizona through west Texas. All of these details are provided daily in the Weather & Radar daily briefing published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET .

The front that Florida has been anxiously waiting for to arrive will inch closer to the Southeast on Wednesday, bringing rain to Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Florida is also experiencing a high level of thunderstorm activity due to a trough traveling over and soon dissipating over the State. The front mentioned above could leave some energy behind, which could spark the formation of a tropical system, more on this below in the Tropical Update section.

Flood risk across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and New Mexico/west Texas.

The front will produce significant lifting in the atmosphere, resulting in numerous showers and thunderstorms across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Although some of the storms could become severe, the biggest threat will likely come from flooding. Specifically, areas from the Florida Panhandle through Central Florida to the Carolinas have a level 1 out of 4 chance for flash floods. Northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia are at a level 2 of 4, indicating they are at risk for flash floods.

Another heavy rain episode, which is expected to persist for several days this week, is the monsoon over parts of west Texas and Arizona. There is also a chance of flash floods occurring, as up to 2 inches of rain could fall, with some areas receiving as much as 4 inches. This might not sound like much, but it has been raining in this area for the last few weeks.

Temperatures will remain between 2 and 8 degrees below average across the Southeast due to the thick clouds, rains, and storms. The TemperatureRadar shows today's highs in the upper 80s across the area. On the other hand, clouds will be thicker and remain in place for most of the day, which will keep the highs across eastern New Mexico and western Texas between the upper 70s and low 80s, around 15 degrees below normal.

Tropical Update

Florida continues to monitor the potential for some energy to be left behind by the front as it moves over the southeastern United States. It is still too early to know if a tropical system will form, but what we do know is that this front is likely to stall. There will be plenty of rain staying put over parts of the Panhandle, north Florida, and even parts of central Florida for several days, which is likely to include the holiday July 4 weekend. Southeastern Georgia and the Carolinas also need to monitor this area as there could be periods of heavy rains associated with, and if, a tropical system develops.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
