Daily briefing
Frigid air invades Plains

After a busy Tuesday full of rain and wintry weather across the East, today's weather focus shifts to the Rockies and Plains. The daily briefing is available every weekday at 5 a.m. ET .

The WeatherRadar shows a new winter storm rolling across the northern and central Rockies today. This will bring snow throughout the Mountain West, with Salt Lake City and Denver having a slick morning commute. The snow will slide into the high Plains of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle later today and tonight.

Heavy snow will roll across the Rockies.

A second winter system, this time a clipper system moving across the Dakotas into the Great Lakes, will bring a quick burst of snow along its path.

The bigger change will be what follows afterward. The TemperatureRadar shows a very cold arctic airmass will settle southward out of central Canada. This will cause temperatures to plummet, with tonight's temperatures dropping below zero across the Upper Midwest, including Minneapolis.

This arctic air will spread south and eastward on Thursday, with tomorrow's highs only in the teens and 20s throughout the central and northern Plains and Midwest.

A quiet but chilly Wednesday is on tap across the South and East with highs in the 40s and low 50s. Florida will be the warm spot with highs in the 70s and 80s. As for the West, there will be some clouds and a few scattered showers in the Northwest, while California, the Great Basin and the Southwest remain mostly sunny. The Northwest will be in the 40s, while the rest of the West will be in the 50s and 60s.
