Daily briefing
Frigid air mass settles in, storm wraps up

A cold Monday is in store. Many won't touch the freezing mark as a cold air mass settles in. The last of the snow from the weekend's winter storm will move out of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic today, with rain making its way out of summery Florida, too. The daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

Snow is falling this morning in the Ohio Valley through the Appalachians and the Northeast as the winter storm finally makes its way off the coast. Gusty winds accompany the exiting system along much of the East Coast, peaking after lunch today and being highest along the Appalachian spine.

More wintry weather is forecast in the Upper Midwest from another low zipping southeast, but the snow will not be widespread. Additionally, the storm's corresponding cold front will have rain showers scooting through Florida early in the day.

The bulk of the storm is done, but hazards remain after the weekend's storm due to the frigid temperatures, possibly causing record cold highs from southwest New Mexico to northern Kentucky today. The snow and ice may be over, but it's not going to melt anytime soon due to these temperatures. On top of that, frozen pipes and electrical load add additional issues.

Highs will only be in the teens and 20s from Bismarck, N.C., and Minneapolis to Oklahoma City and down to Midland, Texas, and eastward into Nashville, Philadelphia, and up through the Northeast. Much colder single digits spread across the Midwest. Slightly warmer 30s and 40s will sweep from southern Texas to the Carolinas and across the Mountain West and Pacific Northwest.

The warmest spots will be the West Coast and the Desert Southwest in the 60s and low 70s, with a range of mid-60s to the 80s across Florida.
