Icy mess hits Mid-Atlantic

Both coast will contend with wintry weather on the year's last Friday even as the more of the southern U.S. feels like spring. This is included in today's Christmas daily briefing, published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

A quick moving winter storm will zip across the Midwest, Great Lakes and the Mid-Atlantic today. Although the WeatherRadar showing this system producing a rainy Friday in most places, a thin corridor of wintry mix and accumulating snow will fall across the northern Appalachians, northern Mid-Atlantic and into the greater New York City and Philadelphia metro areas.

The West Coast remains soggy today as rain continues across California and the Northwest. Heavy snow will fall across the Cascades, Sierra and the Rockies, causing a few travel headaches across the high mountain passes.

The central and southern U.S. will be quiet and mild. The TemperatureRadar shows highs in the low 80s throughout Texas and the southern Plains. The rest of the South, lower and central Mississippi Valley and the Southeast will be in the 60s and low 70s.

The Northeast remain the cold spot with highs in the teens and 20s. Most other places will be in the 30s, 40s or 50s.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
