Daily briefing
Record heat for southern Plains

Record heat builds in for the southern Plains and parts of the Southeast. Showers and storms track into the Southwest, while another system brings showers and storms to the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

Showers track from southern and central California today to the Southwest. Showers and storms will bring a risk of flash flooding across parts of Utah and Arizona, including the Phoenix metro area. A few showers and mountain snow will also impact the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies today.

The WeatherRadar shows showers and storms in the Southwest, as well as rain and storms in the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys.

Another storm will quickly track across the Midwest and Great Lakes into the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys. The cold side of this system will send snow showers across the upper Midwest and parts of the Great Lakes, where up to an inch of accumulation is possible in cities like Minneapolis and La Crosse, Wis.

Scattered storms will stretch across the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys. A few strong storms will be possible in cities like Springfield, Ill., Evansville, Ind., and Lexington and Bowling Green, Ky. Damaging winds and hail are the main threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Record warmth in the 70s and 80s continues across parts of the southern Plains and stretches into the Southeast today. High temperature records are possible in Dallas, Houston, Fort Smith, Ark., Shreveport, La., and Tupelo, Miss. Cooler-than-average temperatures will be in place across the Southwest, eastern Great Lakes and the Northeast.

Tropical Update

Tropical activity is not expected over the next several days. We continue to monitor the tropics as the Atlantic Hurricane Season lasts until November 30.
