Daily briefing: Severe storms possible for Great Lakes, Cali's heat

July 14, 2025

Daily briefing
Heavy Northeast rains, stormy Texas thru Ozarks

A vast portion of the East Coast will be under heavy rains as a cold front dissipates over the Northeast and a low-pressure system, with possible tropical development, brings flash flood risk for Florida this week. Another developing storm will increase the risk for isolated severe storms from Texas through the Ozarks. All of this, along with today's tropical outlook, is included in the daily briefing, published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The main rain activity will be focused from the Mid-Atlantic through the Northeast. The showers will be losing speed, which might allow some flooding to develop. A bit more to the south, we are monitoring a low-pressure system just east of Florida, which will enhance the shower and thunderstorm activity across the Sunshine State through the middle of the week. More about this system below in the tropical update section.

Severe storms could bring damaging winds of at least 58 mph and heavy, constant rains could develop flooding.

Severe storm risk

There is a risk of isolated storms that will expand from west Texas through the Ozarks. Dallas-Fort Worth needs to monitor the chance for severe storms that could produce damaging winds and hail. Heavy rains that started on Sunday will continue on Monday across West Texas, North Texas, and Oklahoma, which elevates the chance for flash flooding. There could be up to 5 inches of rain between North Texas and Oklahoma through Tuesday afternoon.

Tropical Update

We are monitoring the possible development of a tropical system over the Gulf of Mexico. This is the same low-pressure system that will cross Florida early on Tuesday. Once over the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico, this system could become Dexter by late this week. Before it develops, lots of tropical rains will bring substantial rains to much of the Peninsula. South and Central Florida could experience flash floods with some areas that could receive up to 7 inches of rain just on Monday and more coming on Tuesday and Wednesday.
