Daily briefing
Snow, severe storms for Thursday

The Mountain West has a snowy Thursday in store while the central U.S. watches for heavy rain, isolated severe storms and gusty winds. The daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

Gusty thunderstorms are rocking the southern Plains this morning and will shift northeast throughout the day. Chicago, Louisville, Kent., and Memphis, Tenn., could see the heavy rain and storm activity by the evening commute.

Afternoon commutes could be slowed by severe weather along the Mississippi Valley.
Afternoon commutes could be slowed by severe weather along the Mississippi Valley, as seen on the WeatherRadar.

To the West, a winter storm will impact the Rockies, from Idaho to New Mexico, and the Four Corners, with a few rumbles of thundersnow or cold thunderstorms across Arizona and the southern Great Basin.

The Pacific Northwest will also deal with typical coastal rain and mountain snow.

Aside from Gulf Coast showers impacting those from Lake Charles, La., to Jacksonville, Fla., the eastern third will have a quiet Thursday.

Mild 50s and 60s will be found from Chicago and Kansas City over to the Mid-Atlantic today, with warmer 70s and low 80s spreading across the South and Florida. Cooler 30s and 40s will be found in the Northeast, the Midwest, northern and central Plains and across the Mountain West and Pacific Northwest. Typical temperatures in the 50s and 60s will spread into coastal California and down to the Desert Southwest.
