Daily briefing
Summer heat expands nationally

The summer solstice is only days away and hot weather continues to expand across the U.S. The East joins much of the Plains, Mountain West and South in the 90-degree department. All of today's forecast is available in our Daily Briefing, published at 5 a.m. ET sharp every day.

Besides the hot weather, which will be discussed below, today's big weather story will be big storms rolling out of the Midwest and Mississippi Valley and into the Southeast, Appalachians, Great Lakes and the Northeast. A few of these storms could become severe and ruin afternoon rush hours along the highly populated I-95 corridor. The WeatherRadar shows the progress of these storms.

The storms will be fed by unseasonably hot temperatures building along the Atlantic Seaboard. The TemperatureRadar shows afternoon highs in the 90s from Florida to Maine, with building humidity making it feel uncomfortable in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.

Hot weather will also bake the central Plains, Rockies, Great Basin and the interior West Coast. Highs will easily eclipse the 90s, with triple digits in the Southwest. The immediate West Coast will be cooler —highs in the 60s and 70s will be norm —as a cold breeze rolls of the Pacific.

Tropical Update

The Atlantic remains quiet, but Hurricane Erick will continue to push inland on Mexico's Pacific Coast. It will weaken quickly today, not before bringing heavy rain and dangerous storm surge.
