Daily preview: New Years Eve weather

The last day of 2025 will be a quiet one for most of the U.S. However, some rainy trouble is building across California, disrupting another holiday. This is included in today's daily briefing, published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows a Pacific storm spinning into California and the Southwest later today, bringing rain to San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix as the sun sets and New Year's Eve festivities begin.

Meanwhile, an Alberta Clipper will roll across the Great Lakes and the Northeast. This will put a wintry touch on New Year's festivities in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and even the big one in New York City.

The rest of the U.S. will have a quiet end to 2025. The TemperatureRadar shows the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast remaining icebox, with highs only in the teens and 20s. The warm spots to close out the year include the western high and southern Plains, South, and Southeast as highs reach into the upper 50s and low 60s. Everywhere else will be in the 40s and 50s.
