Autumn remains missing

The work week ends with quiet late-summerlike weather dominating most places. A few storms and downpours will continue across the Southeast and East Coast. This, and our tropical update, are available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

High pressure dominating the the central and western U.S. will produce a sun-filled Friday from the Pacific Coast to the Mississippi Valley. There will be a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorm popping up across the Southwest and southern Rockies, so check the WeatherRadar for the latest.

Big storms rolling into the Southeast on Friday afternoon

The Eastern third of the U.S. will see slowly improving weather today. The slow-moving autumn storm that has brought rain and thunderstorms all week will move into the Southeast and the immediate Mid-Atlantic Coast. The strongest thunderstorms will roll across northern Florida into southeastern Georgia.

Autumn remains absent from the U.S. The TemperatureRadar shows Friday's afternoon highs will be in the 70s and 80s across large stretches of the U.S. Even the Southwest will only be in the upper 80s after being in the triple digits all week. Only Florida and the Gulf Coast will be in the 90s.

Tropical Update

Gabrielle has lost its tropical characteristics as it moves into the colder eastern Atlantic east of the Azore Islands.

Humberto became a hurricane earlier today northeast of northern Leeward Islands. It will curve to the northwest and eventually to the north and northeast, well east of the U.S. coast this weekend and early next week.

A third system still trying to get organized over eastern Cuba will turn to the north and move over the Bahamas this weekend, possibly becoming the season's next depression. It could be a threat to the U.S. Southeast Coast early next week, so coastal residents should watch this system carefully.
