Eastern flood risk grows
Debby remnants swamp East

The slow slog of Debby and its remnants up the East Coast continues today, bringing a deluge of rain and flood threat.

The WeatherRadar shows the slow-movement rainmaker sliding up the East Coast. Heavy rain and localized downpours will produce 2 to 4 inches of rain from Washington, D.C., and the mountains of eastern West Virginia northward into the Northeast, including Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. A few spots could receive more than 6 inches of rain.

Select rainfall totals in South Carolina.

Flooding is also occurring in parts of coastal South Carolina around Charleston. An inch or two of rain will fall today in the coastal Carolinas after many locations received more than a foot of rain over the past several days.

This will trigger flash flooding, especially in poor drainage areas and near rivers and creeks. Remember, as this video from South Carolina shows, don’t drive across flooded roads, it could be deeper than you think.

The rain will finally speed out of the Northeast later tonight and Saturday as a cold front pushes Debby’s remnants away. Only a few showers will linger along the New England Coast.

In fact, pleasant and dry air will arrive on Sunday throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and the Carolinas. Sunday night temperatures will drop into the 50s and low 60s, giving the air conditioner a break. Open the windows and let the fresh air in.
