December tornado outbreak underway, more wild weather on the way

Tennessee hard hit
December tornado outbreak underway

A cross-country storm has produced a variety of weather across the eastern half of the U.S. this weekend, and it's not over yet. This system has spawned multiple tornadoes and more severe weather is possible.

The WeatherRadar has been active as powerful storms rolled across the South along a potent cold front, producing a tornado outbreak across Tennessee and Kentucky on Saturday. More severe storms are possible into the evening and overnight hours, with a few strong storms lingering across the Southeast Sunday.

Weather & Radar's expert meteorologists have been tracking this system all week, and intense storms have occurred in the warm sector of this system. Earlier Saturday there was a confirmed large tornado near Dresden, Sharon, and Gleason, Tenn. Another tornado was spotted outside of Clarksville, Tenn., and eventually moved into Kentucky. Structures and vehicles were severely damaged near Clarksville.

Tennessee Department of Transportation cameras also caught a tornado crossing I-65 as it moved east toward Hendersonville. The threat of severe storms will continue across the Mississippi Valley and Southeast into the overnight. Tornadoes remain a hazard as do damaging wind gusts and large hail. While some supercells may still develop into the evening hours, the storms have been taking a more linear shape, indicating more of a wind threat as the night continues. However, it's important to note that this line may still produce tornadoes.

Sunday night

On Sunday, the rain and windy conditions will be the big weather story across the South and much of the eastern U.S. Rain will become more widespread across the East on Sunday. The wettest and windiest period will be from late Sunday into Monday morning for the Northeast. Sunday night and Monday, rain will change to snow in the interior Northeast while rain wraps up along the East Coast.

Major travel delays will be possible as this powerful system marches toward the East Coast. Weather & Radar will keep you up-to-date on the latest developments.
