Delaware, Jay counties
Autumn tornadoes in east-central Indiana

On the autumn equinox, we are usually looking at the fall foliage that is starting to turn colors, but east-central Indiana had other things to worry about.

A strong storm system was racing across the Midwest Sunday bringing very gusty winds and heavy showers. Within the system, east-central Indiana saw two tornadoes; one landspout tornado and another regular tornado.

In Delaware County, a landspout tornado has been confirmed. These tornadoes usually form from the ground upwards and it was not formed within an organized storm cell, which led to the landspout tornado being unwarned to the community other than by tornado siren. There also was no lightning on the WeatherRadar!

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis confirmed damage in Muncie, Ind., from the landspout tornado. Additionally, another tornado was confirmed just to the northeast in Jay County. Tree damage was reported at Jay County Jr./Sr. High School which closed the building on Monday.

The storm system is bringing rain to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today.
