Severe storms unleash widespread flooding, tornadoes across New Mexico

Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms have triggered widespread flooding, evacuations, and tornado activity across New Mexico in recent days.

Some of the worst flooding hit San Juan County, where the San Juan and Animas rivers overflowed, damaging an estimated 1,500 homes and affecting about 2,000 residents. Hundreds of people were evacuated or rescued from rising floodwaters.

Tornadoes were also reported near Deming on October 19 and possibly in Santa Fe on October 24, damaging trees, homes, and power lines. No deaths have been reported from the latest San Juan County flooding, although damage assessments remain ongoing. Emergency officials continue to warn residents of dangerous flooding and additional thunderstorms.

WeatherRadar shows storms mainly east of I-25 through the end of the weekend, with more rounds on Monday over the same region, and some thunderstorms also impacting New Mexico's northwestern portion. The chance of showers and thunderstorms gradually diminishes for Albuquerque and the surrounding area on Monday evening. A drying trend starts Tuesday.
