Find the lotion: Dry skin season is back

Dry skin season is back

Dry skin is common in Winter

Cracks are appearing everywhere, especially on hands and feet. It is time to start your winter dry skin regimen.

So why is this happening? Basically, it is the humidity. This information can be found on Weather & Radar under the hourly forecast.

Colder air can “hold” less water vapor than in summer and the dewpoint is significantly lower. Your skin notices the change as moisture is wicked away. Add the blast of hot air from your furnace and your car vents, and the result is cracked and dry skin.

To flip the script, so to speak, you need to return moisture to skin. Here are the steps to do it:

  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – Use moisturizing lotion morning, day and night. Look for ones that contain vitamins, to help add nourishment to your skin
  • Drink, drink, drink – Staying hydrated is important even in winter. Drinking water helps the body battle the dry air and keeps your body in tip-top shape.
  • Humidify, Humidify, Humidify – Battle the dry air with an indoor humidify while at home.
  • Wear gloves – To stop the loss of moisture through your skin, wear warm, dry gloves outside and when driving.
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses – Protect your exposed skin from sun damage by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to the face, ears and noses. Also, cut down the glare and risk of eye damage with sunglasses that provide UV protection too.
  • Less hot showers -- Although hot showers feel great in winter, the heat can pull moisture out of the skin. Taking slightly cooler and shorter showers will slow down the process. Moisturizing after a shower —make sure you dry off first —helps return hydration to the skin.

As you head out into the cold, check the Weather & Radar application beforehand to see how cold and dry it is. Our UV index will also tell you how much sun will be out.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
