Charlotte's snow drought
First snow in more than 1,000 days

Parts of North Carolina saw measurable snow Monday night into Tuesday. For the first time in over 1,000 days, the northern half of the Charlotte, N.C., metro saw measurable snowfall. However, the snow drought technically continues in Charlotte since the airport only saw a trace amount of snow.

The TemperatureRadar shows a cold air mass over the South. Combine the chill with just enough moisture, and you get snow. Snow swirled around Christmas decorations from Tennessee to North Carolina Monday into Tuesday. The video above shows snow in Statesville, N.C., 40 miles north of Charlotte.

Charlotte, N.C., has not had measurable snowfall (0.1" or more of snow) at the airport in 1,038 days. This snow drought continues for the airport since only a trace was measured early on Tuesday morning. However, parts of the northern metro had measurable snow for the first time in more than two years.

While many communities in lower elevations saw a dusting of snow or just a few flakes, higher totals were observed in the Tennessee and North Carolina mountains. Faust, N.C., picked up 11 inches of snowfall, while 5 inches fell in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

The WeatherRadar shows the potential for more snow from Tennessee into North Carolina on Thursday as a powerful Alberta Clipper pushes across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Cold air will also sink into the Deep South, with freezing temperatures as far south as Mobile, Ala., on Friday morning. Keep an eye on the TemperatureRadar!
