Santa Fe, New Mexico, turned into a winter wonderland on Tuesday as the first snow of the season fell across the city.

While many are still enjoying fall colors, snow is appearing in the forecast for others. Santa Fe, N.M., saw the first snow of the season on Tuesday, and there's more on the way according to the WeatherRadar. In Santa Fe, the first snow typically occurs between October 1 and 31, so we're a little behind schedule this year.

Colored dots indicate the date by which there’s a 50% chance at least 0.1” of snow will have accumulated, based on each location’s snowfall history from 1981-2010.

A few factors impact when a region will see its first snow, including latitude and altitude. Typically, the further north you are located and the higher your altitude is, the earlier you will see snow. Snow can happen year-round in some areas, such as the highest elevations of the Rockies. In other regions, like the Deep South, Gulf Coast or Desert Southwest, snow is rare and absent most years.
