Breakfast Brief
Flooding rains from Francine

Francine continues moving further inland today bringing flooding rains and gusty conditions across the South. Additionally, heat is baking the northern, central and high Plains., while a northwestern storm brings rain and mountain snow.

Hurricane Francine made landfall on Wednesday as a category 2 hurricane. Flooding rains and gusty winds continue moving northward across the South. Track the heavy rainfall on the WeatherRadar.

This day in weather history

Two to three inches of snow fell around Denver today back in 1989, making the afternoon rush hour messy!

Late-season heat is bringing near record-breaking temperatures across the high, northern and central Plains today. Highs will reach into the 80s and 90s as far north as North Dakota!

Record highs are possible in northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin as highs head for the mid-80s there. The oldest record goes back to 1969 in Hibbing, Minn., at 83 degrees.

Finally, a storm system making its way into the Northwest will continue bringing rain and mountain snow across the northern Rockies. Winter weather advisories are posted for some of the first flakes of the season! Hot cocoa, anyone?

Tropical update:

Francine made landfall as a category 2 hurricane in the Parrish of Terrebonne, 30 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, Louisiana. The system will continue to weaken as it moves furth inland bringing the flooding rains as mentioned earlier.

Currently, no other tropical system threatens the U.S. but the Atlantic is busy. Three systems, including one that was named Tropical Depression 7 on Wednesday, are churning in the Gulf. Two other areas out ahead of it have a low chance for development over the next 7 days due to upper-level shear that will become strong by the end of the week.

There is one area off the coast of the Carolinas being watched for low chances of development. We will monitor this disturbance for possible non-tropical development through the weekend.
