Winds, rain, snow sweep across East

Wind forecast

The final of a three day severe storm event has end, but the East Coast isn't out of the wood yet. High winds are sweeping across the Midwest and into the East and Northeast. Heavy snow will move into New England tonight.

9:30 p.m. ET update

All severe storm watches have been in discontinued. The bigger concern for the overnight hours will be:

  • High winds up to 50 mph spreading from the Ohio Valley to the East Coast. This could knock down trees and cause power outages
  • Heavy rain moving across the Mid-Atlantic triggering flash flooding
  • Snow moving into the Northeast.

The same system is producing wild weather north of the border. Canada's biggest city, Toronto is receiving heavy snow this evening, including pockets of thundersnow.

4:45 p.m. ET update

Meanwhile, as our WeatherRadar shows, the northern edge of the massive storm system is producing wintry weather. Road conditions are deteriorating near Chicago as a changeover from rain to wet snow occurs heading into the evening rush hour.

4:30 p.m. ET update

The third day of severe storms have produce wild storms across the South and the Tennessee and Ohio valleys. So far, there has been 1 tornado report and 126 wind reports. Four injuries have been reported.

3:00 p.m. ET update

Our Weather & Radar meteorologist Becca Parker was live on Facebook with an update on the storm threat. Here is the latest:

Wild storms rolled through Starkville, Miss., this morning, knocking down trees and injuring at least once person. This video shows the potency of the storm as it rolled through the campus of the Mississippi State University:

1:55 p.m. ET update

Weather & Radar meteorologist Becca Parker will be going live to talk about the big storms rolling across the Mid-South and Ohio Valley. She'll also offer a weekend preview.

12:44 p.m. ET update

Meteorologist Mary Mays reports from Nashville, Tenn., as the storms inch closer to her location. Winds pick up and the tornado risk increases in the next few hours as the line of storms moves over eastern Tennessee.

12:00 p.m. ET update

The tornado threat is increasing across parts of the Southeast. Northern Alabama, Northwest Georgia, extreme southwest North Carolina, and eastern Tennessee should be aware that severe thunderstorms are approaching and that some of these storms could have rotation, developing tornadoes. Please make sure to have at least 3 ways of receiving weather alerts.

Tornado watch for areas of east Tennessee, northwestern Georgia and northeastern Alabama.

11:00 a.m. ET update

There is a large chunk of the Southeast the southern Great Lakes where high wind advisories are in effect. Some regions could get gusts up to 75 mph with the low-pressure system moving through on Friday.

10:00 a.m. ET update

Some eastern Tennessee school districts have closed due to the pending threat of severe storms moving through the after during the afternoon hours.

9:00 a.m. ET update

Our Weather Radar shows that storms will be passing Nashville shortly before noon. By 2 p.m. CT, the storms will be out of the central Tennessee region and enter the eastern portion of Tennessee.

8:00 a.m. ET update

Severe storms are possible on Friday morning and gain a second round of potential early afternoon hours. The low-pressure system will be quickly shifting to the northeast where periods of heavy snow are possible across Upstate New York, interior Pennsylvania, and interior portions of New England. Heavy rain will stay focused along the coast and over major metropolitan cities, such as New York City and Philadelphia.
