Indonesian Volcano Ruang Erupts Again

WeatherRadar images captured the Indonesian volcano, Ruang, erupting again. Accompanied by volcanic thunderstorms, the eruption sent an ash column up to about 12 miles high into the sky.

Residents within a roughly 4.3-mile radius of the volcano were urged to seek safety. The airport in Manado, the capital of the Sulawesi province, along with other airports in the region, were closed.

The island volcano Ruang had experienced a powerful eruption in mid-April. Due to the unstable volcanic cone, experts had feared a possible landslide that could have triggered a tsunami.

Due to ongoing earthquakes, authorities anticipate further eruptions. They have declared the highest alert level and warned of pyroclastic flows—hot avalanches of ash and embers that could suddenly race down the mountainsides.
