Intense winds, tornadoes
Monday's widespread severe storms

Severe storms target the mid-Mississippi Valley on Monday.Severe storms target the mid-Mississippi Valley on Monday.

Storms are already firing across the mid-Mississippi Valley Monday morning, and the activity continues much of the day. Places like St. Louis and Columbia, Mo., and Peoria, Springfield and Evansville, Ill., all have a significant chance for dangerous storms today. Although these spots are within the greatest risk for the stronger storms, those from southern Wisconsin to northern Mississippi could see severe storms today.

The low-pressure system that brought severe storms to the Plains on Sunday is shifting eastward throughout the day on Monday. Today's storm risk brings the chance for multiple, strong tornadoes and intense, damaging winds.

Although thunder and lightning are already active this morning, the widespread, strong storms are not expected until the afternoon and evening hours - just in time for the Monday PM commute.
