Is the U.S. at risk?
Active hurricane season, Sara's next

The active hurricane season continues and the 18th named storm of the season has formed. Sara is its name.

Tropical Storm Sara is located in the western Caribbean and it will be crawling through the weekend and will likely drop around 20 inches of rain over northern Honduras. Our WeatherRadar shows Sara will remain in the same general area throughout the weekend. Early next week, Sara will be moving through the Yucatan Peninsula.

Could the U.S. be in danger?

The good news is that the official forecast and model trends signal Sara will be crossing the Yucatan and spending much time over the land. Even if it were to intensify to a hurricane before making landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula, its travel over land would really put a dent in the system. Once it emerges over the Gulf of Mexico, it could be badly battered enough and struggle to regroup.

A strong front will also exit the Rockies, bringing strong wind shear, picking up the system and pushing it fast enough to make it race over Florida. It is too soon to pinpoint the exact impacts and locations. We will monitor how it exits the Yucatan and bring you frequent updates. Over the weekend, you can track the storm's rains and winds in our WeatherRadar.
