20°F+ drop
January plunge to bring frigid air

On Wednesday, many will have a "warm" tease across the northern and central Plains, but these 15°F above-average temperatures will only last so long. The end of this week brings the latest arctic outbreak that will dive south and east over the next week beginning Friday.

Weather & Radar meteorologists have been monitoring this bubble of cold, arctic air on weather models for a few weeks now. Forecasts are coming together and the cold air intrusion will begin Friday with the northern tier first on its freezing list. Places like Bismarck and Fargo, N.D., will reach their high temperature on Friday before lunchtime before the gusty, cold air begins spilling in during the afternoon.

The TemperatureRadar shows the cold air diving south. Saturday's high temperature is expected to be around 25 degrees colder than Friday's in the northern tier! For example, Minneapolis will see highs in the upper 30s Friday, with their forecast high temperature of 11°F being on Saturday - a 27°F difference!

The cold air will continue diving south and east throughout the next several days. By the beginning of next week, the cold air will intrude those as far south as Florida, with the coldest air bringing temperatures 25°F below average into the Appalachians and High Plains.

Before this January deep dive, let's enjoy the "warmer" weather happening today and Thursday. The TemperatureRadar shows highs near 40 in North Dakota while Rapid City, S.D. could see spring-like warmth in the low 50s on Thursday! Monitor the temperature roller coaster on the TemperatureRadar and make sure you are prepared for the incoming cold plunge.
