Landfall on October 3
WindRadar view: Fierce Typhoon Krathon

Fierce Typhoon Krathon made landfall in southern Taiwan on Thursday with sustained winds of 78 mph and higher gusts. The WindRadar showed the intensity of the winds as the typhoon made impact.

Taiwan is the landfalling location of around 3 to 4 typhoons per year on average. Typhoon Krathon officially made landfall Thursday afternoon local time in the industrial Siaogang district of Kaohsiung, the second typhoon to make landfall in Taiwan this season.

Heavy rains have been hitting southern Taiwan for days thanks to Krathon's snail-like speed of 2.5 mph. More than 5 feet of rainfall has been reported in the southern Chung Shan Mountains. The cities, like Donggang, have been pelted with several inches as the typhoon made its way in.

The WindRadar picked up the intense wind gusts as Krathon made its way toward Taiwan. As the gusts picked up, across the southern portion of Taiwan, the WindRadar showed values up to 105 mph!

The WindRadar is a great tool for many things beyond tropical weather. Over the next couple of days, critical fire weather will be found across the West, not only thanks to the heat but also the gusty, dry winds as seen on the WindRadar.
