List of names
Pacific & Atlantic Hurricane Seasons

hurricane seasonhurricane season

What are the names on the list this hurricane season? We are glad you ask! Here they are!

The Pacific Hurricane Season officially starts on May 15- fifteen days earlier than the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The reason for the early start is that the Pacific often spins a tropical system earlier due to its vast size and warmer temperatures, (although the Atlantic continues to give the Pacific a run for its money!) There have been talks about matching the start of both Basins, but this has not happened. At least not for the 2024 season.

A name from the Eastern Pacific list is used when a tropical storm forms east of 140ºW, if a system travels west then it would acquire another name. A name for the Atlantic list is used when tropical storms form in the northern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean, or Gulf of Mexico.

Not always male u0026 female names!

Storms were named after holidays when they made landfall or Saints. In 1953, the National Hurricane Center started giving them names, but only female names. Then, in 1979, the list began alternating between male and female names.

Both lists are recycled every 6 years. If a storm, or hurricane, is deemed catastrophic due to deaths and damages the name is retired by the World Meteorological Organization. So far 96 names have been retired from the Atlantic list and 21 from the Pacific list. There is an alternate list of names that will be used in the Atlantic in case all the names are used in a season. The supplemental list was put in place after the 2020 hyperactive season where Greek names were used for the second time in the 70 years that hurricanes have been named.
