A group of brave individuals embarked on an unprecedented adventure—a 378-day earth-based simulation of life on Mars. Imagine being locked away in a 3D-printed enclosure spanning 1,700 square feet, cut off from the outside world, and confronted with the formidable challenges that future human explorers may encounter on the Red Planet.

This ambitious simulation, which commenced on Sunday, marks the beginning of a series of three-year-long Mars surface simulations planned by NASA. The goal? To replicate the demanding conditions and potential hurdles of a real mission to Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, and communication delays. It's an extraordinary endeavor to push the boundaries of human potential and pave the way for the future of space exploration.

Over the course of this year-long mission, the team of intrepid volunteers will immerse themselves in various activities designed to mimic the rigors of space exploration. From simulated spacewalks to robotic operations and the maintenance of their habitat, they will navigate the trials and tribulations that astronauts may face during extended stays on Mars. Every task they undertake will provide invaluable insights into the physical and psychological demands of life on the enigmatic red planet.

The group of volunteers consists of an impressive lineup: research scientist Kelly Haston, structural engineer Ross Brockwell, emergency medicine physician Nathan Jones, and U.S. Navy microbiologist Anca Selariu. Haston takes on the critical role of commander, guiding her fellow explorers through the challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead.
