Post-frontal wind storm knocks out power

A major arctic front made its way through the East Coast on Sunday and the effects are still being felt on the President's Day holiday.

More than 275K customers are without power Monday morning, which is actually an improvement compared to thousands more outages Sunday afternoon and evening. An arctic front has pushed its way east dropping temperatures by 30 degrees. The quick pressure change from low to high and the large temperature difference between the two sides of the cold front caused the major wind storm, and it continues today.

Winds gusted as high as 74 mph in both Elkins, W. Va., and Sabillasville, Md., on Sunday. Yes, that is the minimum wind speed for a Category 1 hurricane. Check out the WindRadar archive below.

High wind warnings and wind advisories continue on Monday across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the cold arctic air mass settles in. Keep a close eye on the WindRadar as these winds could be potentially damaging and cause more power outages.
