Massachusetts brush fire

Unusually dry
Massachusetts brush fire

While the Northeast typically sees fire weather in the spring, an unusually warm and dry autumn has sparked numerous brush fires, including one in Middleton, Mass., over the weekend.

Drought conditions have been expanding across much of the country, including across the South and into the Northeast. Cities such as Dallas, Birmingham, Ala., Atlanta, Philadelphia and New York, are seeing their driest Octobers on record.

The lack of rain has enhanced the fire risk across the Plains and the Northeast over the past few weeks. Over the weekend, a new brush fire erupted in Middleton, Mass., and will take at least a few days to contain.

While the WeatherRadar does show rain for the Plains by mid-week, the East Coast remains mostly dry. With conditions remaining dry, it's important to keep an eye on the WindRadar and avoid burning until wetter weather moves in.
