Monday: Stronger storm coming for California

08:52 PM
January 9, 2023

Early week forecast
More rounds of rain, storms and snow

monday morning outlook

The stronger storm (of this atmospheric river keeps on providing storms after the storm) arrives in California on Monday and it is set to provide a one-two-punch to the West Coast that will last through Tuesday. You can follow our live blog here.

The strongest winds, heaviest snow, and rain will continue to fall through late in the evening on Monday. Additional to what already has fallen in recent days, up to 6 inches of rain are expected along the valleys and elevations above 4,000 feet could receive over 3 feet of snow. The foothills could experience up to a foot of snow.

Except for the extreme southern region of the state, there is some sort of weather alert currently in effect for California. In fact, areas such as Sacramento are under a high wind warning, flood advisory, and flood watch.

A brief break

Although the Bay Area has started to get a break from the heavy rains this morning, more rain is on the way. By the evening another system will move into the area bringing more rounds of showers across the Bay Area including parts of Northern California.

The band of heavy showers that affected central California will continue to travel southward. A few thunderstorms are possible to develop early evening just north of Los Angeles and south of Bakersfield. Showers and even thunderstorms, some that could turn severe, will continue to linger across Southern California and the Inland Empire. The Sierras and mountains of Southern California will continue to have heavy precipitation overnight and into Tuesday.

By sunrise, on Tuesday the showers will be falling mainly across coastal California from the extreme south to the north. The commute will once again be very soggy and dangerous. Heavy snowfall will be affecting the northeastern region of California. Showers will continue to affect much of the state on Tuesday afternoon.

The forecast calls for a brief break from the rains across northern and Central California on Thursday, but the rain could pick up again on Friday night.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to keep a very close eye on this event, taking this opportunity to stay off the roadways and spend some time at home. If you are on or near a burn scar, these spots are prone to flood easily. Track the events on the WeatherRadar and have your notifications switched on.
