More signs of autumn: Cooler day and nights ahead

Cooler days ahead
More signs of autumn

Although football season has been fully underway for several weeks now, the cool, crisp air that accompanies this rite of autumn has been missing for large parts of the U.S. Signs of cooler weather are on the way.

The TemperatureRadar for the past several days has shown the cooler air of autumn locked in the northern Plains and across the upper Midwest. The Southern Plains and South are still sweating in summer-like temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s. Only a few outer fringes are seeing cooler temperatures.

However, cooler weather arrives this weekend across more of the Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic as a cold front slides southward. By Sunday, highs will only be in the 60s in Chicago, Detroit and throughout the Northeast, including Boston. Interior New England will see lows in the 40s Sunday morning.

Looking beyond the weekend on our 14-day forecast, the midweek could be chilly with highs barely scrapping 60-degrees as far south as the central Appalachians. This is a wild swing from the 80s and 90s seen earlier this week.
