Floods in Long Island, NY, forecast

The large low-pressure system hugging the Northeast is very slowly moving away. Weather is gradually improving through the tri-state area by late Saturday afternoon, while eastern parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island could still experience some showers through the evening.

Low pressure moves away from the Northeast and the rain taper off. Low pressure moves away from the Northeast and the rain taper off.

Western Connecticut through New York City and eastern Pennsylvania continue with some flood warnings and advisories in effect this Saturday. After the heavy rains on Friday, many cities were left with flooded streets, homes, and flooded cars.

On Saturday the rain has also been present as the large low pressure system slowly moves further away from the coast. The morning was busy for Long Island as a band of the heaviest rain fell over the region. The northern coast of Long Island will experience coastal flooding this afternoon and evening as the rain tapers off and the wind will continue to push water inland inundating usually dry areas. Also, accounting for the higher-than-normal tides due to the full moon, there could be up to one-half foot of inundation above ground level near the waterfront and shoreline, especially during the high tide times. Please avoid these areas.

Forecast

Winds will be gusty at times too, especially along the coast as the storm moves east, away from the U.S. Expect gusts up to 20 mph and north-northeast winds between 10-15 mph. the rain will be gradually diminishing from west to east and the clouds will also be on their way out, still expect cooler-than-normal temperatures this afternoon and evening. Highs will be in the mid-60s and lows tonight slightly cooler than average in the mid-50s.

Sunday will be a mostly sunny and cool day with the wind still out of the north and temperatures in the mid 70s.
