Midweek snowstorm: where is it headed?

The central U.S., Mid-South and Southeast are in for a new winter storm threat this week.

The WeatherRadar shows a new storm system coming together beginning on Tuesday as a low pressure moving east through the southern Plains and a record-breaking arctic air mass meet up in the central U.S. Widespread heavy snowfall will begin late tonight in the central Plains, and by Tuesday at lunchtime, local time, we expect to see a robust storm system bringing snow, ice, rain and frigid temperatures.

In addition to the snow, we expect isolated severe storms along the Gulf Coast, especially from Houston to New Orleans. Heavy rains could also bring an isolated flooding risk as the low pressure taps into abundant Gulf moisture. Have your alerts switched on to receive the latest information on the severe weather and heavy rainfall.

By late night Tuesday, the storm will arrive in the mid-South and head east toward the lower Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Commuters will need to keep a close eye on the WeatherRadar as major metro areas such as Louisville, Nashville and Memphis, Tenn., see Wednesday morning impacts with Virginia Beach, Va., and Raleigh and Charlotte, N.C., having Wednesday evening commute impacts from snow and/or ice.

The WeatherRadar is the best tool to use to know what type of precipitation you can expect in your area. If you're new to this tool, brush up using our guide! Weather & Radar meteorologists will have more on this system as the storm evolves.
