Wet eastern half, drought relief?

An autumn storm is impacting the eastern half bringing drought-quenching rains, but is it enough?

The WeatherRadar shows rain and thunderstorms from the Upper Midwest to the lower Mississippi Valley today and this wet weather will continue east Thursday and Friday. Every U.S. state is being impacted by some sort of abnormally dry period or worse, drought with a large trouble spot impacting the Ohio Valley and western Maryland.

Drought as of November 5, 2024. The Ohio Valley, western Maryland extreme drought area has been growing since August 2024. National Drought Mitigation Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Up to 2 inches could accumulate by early Thursday morning along the Mississippi River Valley, but we're interested in a specific spot in southwestern Pennsylvania right on the western Maryland border called the Youghiogheny River Lake.

Back story - this lake was formed when the Youghiogheny River Dam was created in 1944. The lake intentionally flooded the town of Somerfield, Penn., which included the historic Great Crossings Bridge built in 1818. Due to the extensive drought, the bridge has appeared as water levels are very low.

Our WeatherRadar shows rain moving in late Thursday morning to the very dry region. Up to an inch of rain is possible where the severe drought continues but much more is needed to make up for the very dry months that have preceded. See when the next rain chances are possible on the 14-day forecast.
